HISTORY OF MONTGOMERY TRANSITIONAL SERVICES, INC. (MTS)

In 1979, the need for a program to teach living skills to patients returning from psychiatric institutions, to the community, became apparent. For this reason, the president of the Mental Health Association of Montgomery County appointed a committee to write a proposal for the establishment of a local community residence. The committee met weekly and wrote a functional program that was subsequently accepted by the New York State Office of Mental Health.

MTS became officially incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation in 1980. Thereafter, it began its search for outstanding citizens to sit on the board. The extraordinary quality of the original board members has continued until the present day.

In June, 1980 the first Community Residence was opened;  it remains a  ten (10) bed residence. Since the inception of the organization, MTS has developed an array of other programmatic options. Each service that is availed by MTS is distinctly focused on the individual.

MISSION STATEMENT: MTS’ GOAL IS TO EMPOWER INDIVIDUAL CONSUMERS BY: ASSISTING THEM TO IDENTIFY AND REACH PERSONAL, WORK , AS WELL AS EDUCATIONAL GOALS; MAINTAIN PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL WELLNESS;  CARRY OUT THE SKILLS OF DAILY LIVING, AND INTERACT WITH OTHER MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY.
